Catalog synthesis

The idea, in plain language

Two tiers exist. Academic and market-research panels (Prolific is the best-paying, with a stated floor of about $8–12 an hour and many studies above it; Swagbucks, Survey Junkie and similar are far lower) pay a few dollars per 5–20 minute study, and the money comes from being online when studies drop. Product research is worth much more per session: UserTesting pays $10 per 20-minute recorded test and $30–120 for live interviews, User Interviews and Respondent list one-hour interviews at $50–200 depending on how specific the screener is (senior engineers, physicians, small-business owners get the high end), and dscout pays for multi-day diary studies. Realistic income is $50–150 a month on the survey tier and $100–500 a month on the interview tier if your profile matches a paid niche. The work is answering screeners honestly and quickly; the constraint is supply, not skill. Nothing scales, but it also needs no audience, no product and no risk.

Where the sources agree

  • Prolific is the only survey panel worth daily attention; the rest pay below minimum wage once screen-outs are counted.
  • Interviews pay 10x surveys — fill in professional details on User Interviews and Respondent so the expensive screeners find you.
  • Answer screeners consistently; platforms cross-check answers and ban accounts that change their story to qualify.
  • Set notifications and act within minutes — studies fill in the first hour.

Where they differ

  • Prolific has a waitlist for new participants in some countries and releases spots in batches.
  • UserTesting quality-rates each recording; ratings under 4 stars reduce the tests you are offered.
  • Respondent charges researchers, not participants, but payouts route through PayPal and can take weeks.
