AI data annotation and expert-rating gigs
Hourly remote work rating, correcting and writing training data for AI labs through Outlier, DataAnnotation, Telus International AI, Appen and Mercor.
The idea, in plain language
AI labs buy human feedback at scale and outsource it through a handful of platforms. Outlier (Scale AI) and DataAnnotation.tech pay $15–25 an hour for generalist tasks and $35–60 an hour for domain experts — coding, math, law, medicine, finance, non-English languages — where you compare model answers, write ideal responses, or find errors in reasoning. Telus International AI (formerly Telus Digital / Lionbridge) and Appen run the older search-rater and speech-data programs at $10–20 an hour, often with a fixed weekly hour cap. Mercor and similar recruit credentialed experts for higher-paid, interview-gated projects. Onboarding is an unpaid assessment and a long queue; once inside, work arrives in bursts and disappears for weeks, so income is lumpy: $200–800 a month for generalists who log in daily, $1,000–3,000 for experts on an active project. Pay is hourly with time tracking, tasks are graded, and low-quality accounts are removed without appeal.
Where the sources agree
- Pay follows credentials: a specific expertise (a language, a STEM degree, a professional license) roughly doubles the rate and the volume of tasks offered.
- Availability is the real variable — projects pause without notice, so keep two or three platforms onboarded.
- Read the task guidelines every time; accuracy audits decide whether you keep the work.
- Treat the unpaid assessment as the interview: most rejections happen there.
Where they differ
- Outlier pays weekly via PayPal or AirTM; DataAnnotation pays daily; Telus and Appen pay monthly.
- Telus and Appen limit hours per week and often require a specific country of residence for a given project.
- Some expert projects are misclassified as contractor work in a way that may not fit every country's tax rules.
